MORANA Artillery system
The self-propelled gun howitzer MORANA is a sophisticated artillery weapon caliber 155 mm / 52 caliber with automatic charging, designed for fast and effective support of operational-tactical and tactical groupings of ground forces. The unique Fire Control System and diagnostic system enables autonomous fulfillment of combat tasks.
The unique construction of the self-propelled gun howitzer MORANA represents a combination of a car chassis and an independent tower artillery system with a crew protected by armor. It combines the advantages of lighter self-propelled artillery systems of the TMG (Truck Mounted Gun) category and heavy artillery systems with battle towers.
It therefore offers low weight and associated easy transport, high mobility on paved roads and in difficult terrain, while eliminating the need for road carrier logistics, as is the case of tracked artillery systems, a high level of crew protection, fully automatic loading system, weapon guidance and aiming and large capacity of ammunition.
Onboard control and diagnostic system
The MORANA howitzer is equipped with a powerful Onboard control and diagnostic system which contains subsystems of diagnostics, navigation, automatic gun guiding, autonomous calculation of shooting elements and ammunition management. The howitzer is equipped with an automatic guiding system that allows fast and fully-automatic gun adjustment into target direction
Basic capability of the on-board control system is to prepare the howitzer for firing within 40 seconds of stopping in the firing position. This operation is performed in automatic mode without neccesity to leave the cabin, ie. gun aiming at the target, ammunition charging and firing is controlled from workplaces in the cabin.
The diagnostic system enrols the operating data of selected vehicle systems or fault conditions. The diagnostic system displays these parameters and statuses on the displays at the individual workplaces in the cab. Depending on the requirements, the selected data can be sent to the superior level to assess the combat capability or in case of need to plan logistic support. Fault conditions are archived for needs of service maintenance purposes.
The special architecture of the onboard control system enables the integration of the customer's fire control system solution.
Morana is designed for agile movement and quick fire support. Its systems allow for standard artillery battery integrated operation, but also for stand-alone task performance or swift reaction in case initiative needs to be taken under changing circumstances.
The howitzer can operate in various climatic conditions, overcome long distances, establish position in difficult terrain and carry out the mission day and night.
Morana features a 155 mm / 52 calibre primary weapon capable of reaching over 41 kilometers distance. The crew has fourty-five carried rounds available for their task completion. Fully automated gun loading allows the crew to fire up to 6 rounds within the 1st minute from establishing position. MRSI fire mode is available.
Sophisticated and powerful GPS/INS navigation, ballistic trajectory calculator and diagnostic computer systems are handled by simplified user interface for fast and precise action. Gun aiming and firing can be carried out automatically or manually.
The howitzer is mounted on the latest TATRA four-axle central loading tube chassis. The patent-protected TATRA system is extremely durable, maintains perfect grip and reduces shock and torsion related wear when crossing uneven terrain. It performs well on road and even better off it alowing the vehicle to reach positions in terrain usually deemed only suitable for tracked vehicles.
The undercarriage features real-time diagnostics, 600 hp engine, automatic transmission and CTIS. Unusual wider wheelbase and all axles steerable deliver unprecendented stability and maneuverability.
Morana can be deployed self-propelled or by rail, sea and air.
Thanks to full automation of the system, the vehicle is operated by a crew of only 3 - driver, aimer and commander.
The crew handles the whole system from within the protected modular EA Puma cabin that is certified for STANAG 4569 Level 2 against both ballistic and landmine threats. The cabin is pressurized and the air intake is fitted with NBC filters. Heating and air-conditioning is available.
Morana can fire at enemy positions, structures and static or even moving vehicles directly in case of emergency. Direct fire is available to the crew within a range of 5 kilometers, 3 at night. An integrated secondary weapon offers extra protection and firepower to the crew for close engagement and low altitude UAVs.
Should the ballistic and navigation computer system not be available or properly aligned Morana offers an emergency mode of manual aiming via supportive optical devices – unlike most other systems in the market.
The gun turret is powered independently to ensure weapon operability in spite of eventual deliberate or accidental vehicle engine stop.
